What proverbs or wise sayings would be the most applicable to help reduce Chicago shootings.
About This Post
The Chicago Tribune on January 3, 2017 reported two shootings by police of unarmed men. This post is what I would surmise King Solomon would have advised the victims based on the reported story. I have no other information about the incidents other than what was reported. The purpose of this post is not to judge or take sides with any of the people involved.
Rather the purpose of this post and future posts is to attempt to relate ancient wisdom to current events. Perhaps by doing so, a message may evolve from the most recognized King Solomon statement made three thousand years ago.
“Nothing is new under the sun.”
Hopefully, perhaps these posts may result in a meaningful conversation about teaching wisdom in our schools to promote the general welfare of our nation.
Violence has been recorded from the beginning of human history. There is nothing new about violence. In my opinion, what would be new is how we humans could do something wise and learn from the recorded wisdom of the past and apply the wisdom to “wise up” to prevent the same types of violence that continues to reoccur in each new generation. For example, every new generation in the history of mankind has experience a war or the effects of a war.
And just about every location in the world, men of women of goodwill continue to preach, instill, teach, and demonstrate love as the answer to most of the problems of humankind. However, in my opinion, we need both love and wisdom.
That these King Solomon Proverb, if applied by the victims before the incidents, may have prevented the two shootings reported in Chicago today.
A King’s wrath is a messenger or death, but the wise will appease it. (Proverb 16:14 NIV)
The simplest rule about authority is to obey it. If you obey a ruler well, favor and promotion are sure to follow. If you shame those in authority, punishment and trouble are sure to follow. This is true for all spheres of authority.
Anyone who is among the living has hope –even a live dog is better off than a dead lion! (Ecclesiastes 9:4 NIV)
In ancient time a dog was considered a lowly animal and a lion esteemed for its bravery. In the USA, we have courts and laws to protect and rule with justice in any dispute. However, there will never exist any living hope regardless who was right or wrong, oance a person is dead.

Whether the vase hits the stone, or the stone hits the vase, the results are the same.
In Other Words
A policeman with a gun has been given lawful authority to use it. It is wise to obey his lawful command than to confront him.
