What is wrong with complaining about the truth?

The Chicago Tribune should be complimented for being on a mission to report Chicago shootings and gang violence. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it employs news commentators who insert personal opinions which conflict with the civic purpose of the news media.

The civic purpose of journalism is to provide people with the information they need to be free and self-governing?

For Example

On Sunday, January 8, 2017, Commentator Clarence Page wrote a commentary titled, Torture case reopens our racial wounds – if we let it. In my opinion, he reports the truth of the matter but ends his commentary with this statement.

“Unfortunately, too many people don’t want us to get better. They’d rather complain.”

What’s Wrong with Complaining About the Truth

Most private businesses that care about their business and reputation employ people to handle complaints to resolve problems. The problems in Chicago are significant and the truthful solution was commented by an unpaid writer in the Voice of The People titled. ‘A Path Forward.‘

In My Opinion

Everyone seems to know the problems in Chicago and how to solve them. What is happening in Chicago is there is no Customer Service Department listening to the complaints or advice.

What the Tribune Editors need to do is to edit out of commentators their personal opinions and just report the truth. The complainers may be expressing their hyperbole opinions, but that is what happens when the news media stops reporting their civic purpose which again is, to provide people with the information they need to be free and self-governing.

My Recommendation to the Chicago Tribune Editors

Read this Wikipedia Article and focus on Consistency (strict). Strict consistency is when claims are connected in such a fashion that one statement follows from another.

Perhaps you should fire all the commentators and just report the Voices of the People instead, your readers?

I know, you need to sell newspapers to stay in business. Controversial commentaries help sell more papers. Perhaps you should also consider the following proverb. Who knows, today most people have a low opinion of news media. Perhaps strict editing of your commentators opinion statements may increase your circulation?

King Solomon
A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.(Proverb 22:1NIV)
