Does the First Amendment protect Secularists from Religion, or does it protect Religious Believers from Government?
In a previous post, an interesting commentary developed about Government run Public, versus Private Religious Schooling and opinions of the whys and wherefores for the need for school vouchers.
We all have personal opinions, however, what amazed me was the statement made by a concerned, feisty, articulate young woman, that the purpose of the First Amendment was “about freedom from religions.”
The purpose of this post is to question how and where this young woman came about to believe the intention and purpose of our Nation’s Founders reasons of the First Amendment that pertains to religion. Did some Liberal college course professor teach her his personal Atheist opinions, or who, or where, was she taught to believe, that she needs “protection from religion?”
In other words, what the heck is going on in our public, or private school’s education teachings in the USA, that any young person in the USA, would state he or she needs protection from religion? A nation which inscribed the words on our currency, “In God We Trust.”
King Solomon
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.(Proverb 22:6 NIV)
You can be ruined by the talk of godless people, but the wisdom of the righteous can save you. (Proverb 11:9)
In My Opinion
How sad it is to read a comment from a young woman in the USA.
If Interested,
Read the post and the commentary that ensued, 78 comments, and ask yourselves this question on this Memorial Day Weekend, that we honor the men and women who served and died for freedom in the USA,
You Decide
Were the sacrifices of the heroes who served in the armed forces of our nation in vain, because our founders beliefs and principals of freedom are being subverted by the poor, sad quality of education or media, of both our Constitution, and/or the morality of our young men and women, in the USA?

Citizen Tom
When did the founders put “In God we trust” on our currency? My guess is that the founders had all passed away before that happened. I also support freedom from religion, although the First Amendment may not protect us from that.

You are right, it was in Lincoln’s term. I amended my post.
Curious though why you believe 1st Amendment protects you from religion. Where you taught or is that an opinion?

I said that it did not protect from religion. As an agnostic, I prefer to avoid religion.

I misunderstood your comment. Sorry.
Also sorry you are an agnostic. If interested, check out Citizen Tom’s Isiah quote which in my opinion is applicable to a person’s choice to be agnostic.
Just my opinion, please do not take it personal. It is your freedom of choice because of the First Amendment.

I seem to recall that Citizen Tom stated at one time he too was an agnostic.

There are some Christians who overdo the preaching, but most don’t. Most are too intimidated to preach at all. There is also a doctrinal reason for restraint. No one can make someone believe in Jesus. Once we have explained the Gospel to someone, whether they choose to believe is between them and God.
Nevertheless, Americans need to know the Bible. Christianity is an integral part of the Western Civilization. To understand our history and how the founders expected our society to function, we each need to read and study the Bible. Unfortunately, there is nothing good the government can do about this problem. When government employees teach the teach the Bible, that tends to be too problematic.
People are either for the Bible or against it. Neutrality is exceedingly unusual. Because our government is not supposed to establish a religion, we cannot put government institutions in the business of teaching the Bible. Like it or not, they will be partisan, one way or the other.

I am not against the Bible, I just do not accept it as the word of God. There is much good there, and much evil has been done in its name by the misguided.

I’ll make it even easier, the “First Amendment” doesn’t protect anyone from religion, if it did they would have to pay taxes to the communities they reside in.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
In fact, it only addresses a minor point in respect to religion. it simply states to not pass laws that support or hinder religion.
Another fact would be that this is violated everytime a congressman speaks of how his religion guides him in lawmaking decisions. This is something we have all seen on TV and know is a direct violation but do nothing about it.
Just a thought

Thanks for your comment and opinion.
. The way I view a politician making the statement is he or she is humbly admitting he or she is a human and subject to human error.
Seculars don;t use the phrase because they believe like most fools proven in history to consider their political philosophy is the best thing for everyone.
For example, the following politicians in recent history shunned God. Hitler, Stalin, etc..
Granted on the converse, Bin Laden, called on his God to kill Americans.
My point is people who pray to a God, usually get whats coming to them.
Bin Laden called on his God and got what hie deserved. “He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword: ” when he called to pray to kill or harm people.
Or, sometimes a prayer is for guidance that thier decision will help people instead of harm them..
Which politician would you rather have on your side based on his or her prayer for guidance. One who is humble or one that is not.
Regareds and good will blogging.

That’s an easy question and here’s my answer: I want all congressmen who use religion to be arrested for violation of the first amendment per the law of the land required by God to be followed. We either trust God or we don’t.
Romans 13 Living Bible (TLB)
13 Obey the government, for God is the one who has put it there. There is no government anywhere that God has not placed in power. 2 So those who refuse to obey the laws of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow.
Here is the law of the land:
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
And now when you see them up there stating how their religion is guiding them to make your laws you should want what God wants.
As for me, I don’t want an America that one day has someone with a Satanic religion up there dismissing the law like those who shared my religion to dismantle the country.
