“You keep goofing and laughing like that and you’ll end up crying.”
The cartoon in the Chicago Tribune depicted in the first box a news announcer’s statement, “Now let’s take a look at the good news for this week.”
The second box was blank,
The third box statement was. “Thank you and good night.”
In other words, the harsh reality in all the articles reported today only contained bad news reports of the happenings in Chicago and Nation.
The Purpose to This Post
Is to relate ancient proverbs about the present times we are experiencing in our contemporary times. The purpose to discern if the root cause is related to our being our obsessed to seek pleasure to escape the harsh reality of life we are now experiencing.
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, And the end of mirth may be grief. (Proverbs 14:12,13)
“Why is this so? The answer is that a life based solely on pleasure cannot cope with life’s harsh realities. Think of all the celebrities who have partied till they burned out. I can remember as a kid my parents and grandparents saying something like, “You keep goofing and laughing like that and you’ll end up crying.” And sure, enough we would do something stupid to spoil our fun and bring us to tears. It is like that in life too.”
What’s My Point?
The news articles reported there were another 71 shootings and 12 deaths over the weekend in Chicago. Other cities are experiencing increases in shootings. Riots are continuing in Portland for 52 straight night and local authorities are suing rather than assisting Federal Agents for their attempt to help reduce the violence in the riots.
If you read the details of the Chicago shootings, most are people are being shot during gatherings in late evening into early morning hours.
None of the reports of the shootings explain the motives for the shootings, which in my opinion are all related to drugs.
My point is to agree with the message of the cartoon that indeed, there is no good news in today’s Chicago Tribune.
In My Opinion
Perhaps we need to consider that now is not the time to be goofing off and address the harsh realities of life in this sad time we are experiencing.
For example, wear a mask to reduce the risks of COVID and address the motives of the shootings, which in my opinion, are most likely to be gangs profiting from selling drugs and people who have become addicted to drugs. Most of the people shot were at the time either innocent victims or people who are seeking pleasure in gatherings while ignoring the reality of the risks of violence in Chicago that goofing off and laughing may result in crying and grief.
In other words, seeking pleasure to escape the harsh realities is not wise during certain times of harsh realities in life.
What is needed instead of seeking pleasure that may lead to bad rather than good experiences, is meaningful wisdom and love instead of “goofing off” , especially during the times of harsh realities in life.
