Is it wise or foolish to pass laws to attempt to control people from moral, physical, personal or mental issues because, when outlawed, it’s harder for people fall back into their unhealthy or harmful actions to themselves or others?
The sad news of the Texas school shootings is once again focusing the pro and cons issues of the need for gun control in the USA as a means for government to hopefully reduce shootings or bitter experiences occurring daily across the USA.
The Purpose of This Post
Is to relate an ancient wisdom verse to the conundrum of passing laws to outlaw guns, or known harmful personal choices made my its citizenry that led to death or injury from harmful or bitter experiences to themselves and others.
King Solomon
So, give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (1Kings 3:9)
Excerpt
Wisdom is a matter of knowing which voice and whose words to listen to (cf. Colossians 2:3-4). Experience may end up being an effective teacher, true enough, but Proverbs aims to persuade us to hear wisdom before we find ourselves with a storehouse of bitter experience. Biblical wisdom majors on prevention.
What’s My Point?
Regardless of what word or issue we want to insert in any argument with the intention to pass a law in hopes the law to make it harder for any society to partake in a harmful action against themselves or someone else will solve the issue just because there is a law passed to control or protect citizenry.
My point is government power is limited and often ineffective. At best government legislators must have a discerning heart to t first hear both sides of arguments in order to judge between issues of good or bad societal interests on any issue.
For example, guns don’t kill people. Bad or sick people use guns to kill good people who do not have guns to defend themselves from people who have guns.
On the converse, when government passes laws to limit access to guns, it may help make it harder for bad people to use guns to harm good people, while at the converse, can make it easier for bad people with guns to obtain control over good people.
Add that if we include other potential known harmful issues such as drugs, alcohol, menthol, abortion, etc. the same converse arguments can apply to government control over freedom of a society
In My Opinion,
In the USA Democrat Republic, we have the freedom to choose legislators to represent our freedom and discern issues and manage governing our society in a wise and discerning manner by first hearing all sides to arguments.
The USA government politicians are apparently sadly in need of wisdom to discern the issues and pass laws to prevent or reduce folly.
Sadly, government is made up of humans instead of gods, many who have never been taught to understand wisdom in early youth to help them discern the gun arguments issues to help what in ancient times was prescribed by the wiseman to prevent folly is Biblical prevention measures.
Also, sadly, no matter what laws are passed by government, nothing is going to solve the issues in a society that does not enforce the laws or passes laws with loopholes to prevent enforcement of the laws passed.
Or in other words, too many government leaders having never been taught in depth in their youth the Wisdom and Love lessons in the Bible, have now grown up to become legislators with hearts unprepared to hear, understand, and discern how to judge issues in a wise and discerning manner of Biblical prevention.
In my opinion, most States have laws to prevent citizenry under 21 years from making obtaining or known harmful behaviors such as guns, drugs, at an age when their minds have not matured. If the Texas shooter would have been able to purchase the guns and ammunition legally, it might have prevented him from killing a fellow human.
And if the shooter had been taught in his youth the Biblical wisdom and love in the Bible, it might have prevented him from one of the most ancient laws in resistance.
Thou shalt not kill.

You Decide
Is it time to replace government leaders in the upcoming election who will not hear, understand and discern their roles as leaders includes their role “to be “a servant with a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong?”
Will passing any law or teaching every youth Biblical prevention path in life, sadly will never end madness and folly in the USA or World?
Is it wise or foolish to attempt to “make it harder for immature youths to fall back into their unhealthy or harmful actions to themselves or others?”

The number of people killed by bad governments with guns easily dwarfs the number killed by nutcases with guns.

Tom,
Your statement based on history of government control of guns cannot be disputed.
Problem is in our contemporary times; we now have generations of youth that bear no resemblance to humans from previous history.
Entire generations of youths have grown up in single family households, never introduced to Bible teachings of Wisdom and Love to help them discern straight paths in life.
Add government failure to control illegal drugs and even promote use of mind alteration recreational drugs which same as alcohol is illegal for youths under 21, adds more exposure and use by youths.
Add social media indoctrination of youth.
In my opinion, the Texas shooter was probably on drugs when he crashed his truck on the way to the school.
Legislators need to agree to limit sales of guns to anyone under 21 and require a background check to hopefully prevent another reoccurrence of shootings with people using drugs for recreational purposes’
It certainly will not solve the gun problem, but might have prevented the Texas shootings.
The solution to the gun problems in the USA is the failure to teach Biblical Wisdom and Love to youth to discern before they experience the folly of their foolish choices which is the basis of Biblical prevention teachings.

Tom,
News reports never report the drug condition of people involved in crimes, auto accidents, or folly they perpetuate.
What I do know is most recreational drugs alternate normal brain function directly when ingested and most scientific studies agree but have no way or means to prove people’s actions may have direct correlation to their foolish actions.
The present activist focus is to blame mental conditions instead of government legislators who ignored all the warnings about the use of recreational drugs, and/or do not support strict measures to prevent criminals transporting illegal drugs mainly from southern borders and other ports of entry into the USA including the USA postal service.
Why is beyond me.
I have not read any news reports to investigate if the Texas shooter was on an illegal or even legal drug, and frankly doubt it will ever be reported.
What I have read is ever since recreational marijuana has been made legal, traffic deaths have increased and the number of people using TCP in higher dosages are increasing as police warned would happen but legislators ignored.
Many homeless people are known drug addicts and have mental problems, perhaps the result of recreational drug usage, which never is reported in the daily news reports for some reason.

My guess is that the drug cartels are buying our politicians. I fear most news media talking heads are corrupt. They are more worried about angering Islamic terrorists, drug lords, gambling syndicates, crony capitalists, Chinese Communists, various tyrants, and so forth than they are about doing their jobs.

Tom,
I believe a lot more people agree with you about cartels and special interests control over our legislators.
Why after all the time and money spent by government in the war on drugs to prevent illegally gain access to such a wide range of sellers on public streets has never succeeded is beyond my comprehension.
